Around the Block: Mishawaka, Indiana

Located in St. Joseph's County, "the Princess City" is to the east of South Bend in north central Indiana, near the border with Michigan.

Legend has it that Mishawaka gets its name from the daughter of Shawnee chief Elkhart. The discovery of bog iron deposits attracted settlers in the early 1830s, which founded the town of St. Joseph's Ironworks. Later, it combined with Indiana City to form Mishawaka. It is the home of the plant that manufactures the Humvee, made by AM General.

For my time in Mishawaka, I focused around the area in the historic downtown area, centered at Main St. and Lincoln Way. I worked north a couple of blocks, to the east 3 blocks and a block south. The area north and west was under construction.
